Bingo at the VFW is back in business. For a few weeks now, the Olan Forest Smith Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8577, has welcomed bingo fans back into their halls, with restrictions of course. Bingo establishments can open again from the 4th July with social distancing. As more and more of us are either self isolating or keeping our social distance from one another this week, it’s very uncertain now as to. BINGO fans can once more try their luck at a full house as Mecca Bingo reopens its doors on July 4 with table service and early bird sessions. Her mother had been sick, so getting to play bingo with her again was a treat. “It means that things are opening up and things are returning to normal.” Bingo fan Michael Trubee was both excited to play bingo and support a good cause while doing so. Greene County’s bingo facilities are once again open for business, but they’re all adhering to Alabama’s guidelines amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On may May 22 at 5 p.m. Gov. Kay Ivey officially OK’d reopening entertainment venues like bowling alleys, arcades and bingo halls. The venues must operate at 50% capacity, however.

Greenetrack reopened five days after Ivey lifted the restrictions.

River’s Edge, The Palace and the Frontier bingo facilities all reopened after closing March 16.

“My office did an inspection on all four facilities,” said Greene County Sheriff Joe Benison. “We did a walk through on all of them and all of them are within the governor’s guidelines.”

Benison regulates bingo in Greene County. All customers will be required to wear masks and have their temperatures taken before entering any of the bingo halls, Benison said.

The electronic bingo facilities have also installed plexiglass between machines so patrons have a barrier between themselves, and there are hand sanitizing stations throughout the buildings.

Smoking is also not allowed inside the building.

“I have to be honest, I really appreciate that we’re all working together and doing what’s right for Greene County and for the state of Alabama,” Benison said.

Benison said his office will be keeping a close eye on all four facilities to make sure they are following the guidelines.

“The ones that are not operating within the guidelines will be shutdown,” he said.

The electronic bingo facilities are among the largest employers in Greene County.
